Fundamentals for the US steel industry remain strong with domestic mills enjoying a high capacity utilization rate, healthy lead times and strong demand for specialized products. YoY import data continues to fall with many of the exporting countries that had been major players being put in the penalty box or kicked out entirely. It’s important to recognize the permanent shift in the total supply potential of imported tons that has occurred. There are many other countries from which steel can be imported, but the collective tons imported from these countries cannot fully replace the tons eliminated from the countries that received prohibitive duties from the trade cases.
